How to Join the St. John Discord Server (Desktop Instructions)

Coming soon! Check back here later for instructions on joining the server from your mobile device.

Step One: Joining the Server

1.

To join the server, click this link: https://discord.gg/nXFR4wsnJ8

2.

If you do not have a Discord account, you will be prompted to create a username.

Note: You will have the opportunity later to set up a “nickname” in the server that will only be visible to other members of the parish Discord. At this point, just use whatever username you would like.

3.

Discord will ask you to verify your age and create a Discord account by entering your email and a password.

After clicking “Claim Account,” you will be prompted to download the desktop app. Use of the desktop app is optional—you can also use the app in the web browser.

Step Two: Verification

1.

At this point, your access is restricted to just the voice channels, which you can see on the left side of your screen.

2.

To participate fully in the server, we need to verify that you are a member (member or catechumen) of St. John Orthodox parish. At the top and bottom of the screen below, see the message prompting you to complete a few more steps.

Click the Complete button.

3.

If you haven’t already, verify your email address by clicking the link in the email that Discord sent you. (If you have verified, the Verify button in this picture will say “Verified” and be green.)

4.

Read through the rules and mark the checkbox saying that you have read and agree to the rules. Click Submit.

5.

Verification is manual, which means you’ll need to wait for a moderator to confirm your membership.

Once a moderator has verified you, you will see additional channels available in the server.

Step Three: Set up a Nickname

If you read the rules, you saw that we have a real name policy. Specifically, the rule is “Use a name that people will recognize.” At a minimum that means the first name you go by at church and a last initial, but including your last name and—optionally—baptismal name is encouraged. However, since the username you set up earlier is the same across any other servers you may be a part of, you may not feel comfortable making your username something identifiable. You may want to set up a “Nickname” that is specific to this server, which means no one except other members of the server will see it. Here are instructions on doing that:

1.

Click on your user name in the bottom left corner of the server and select the “Edit Profile” icon in the top corner of the dialog box.

2.

Go to Server Profiles and choose St. John the Forerunner Church from available servers.

Note: if you are not a member of any other servers, this option is greyed out.) In the Nickname field, type your name.

Click Save Changes at the bottom of the window.

3.

Profile pictures are not required, but if you want to set a profile picture, go back to the User Profile tab and select the Change Avatar button. If you do set a profile picture, it must be appropriate.
